Leyes Campaign Has More Available Resources
Factoring outstanding bills, that leaves Tran and Leyes deadlocked with available primary cash of $170,000 each.

(Sacramento) First Enron. Then California. Now Van Tran. Upon a thorough review of finance reports filed with the Secretary of State, it was discovered that the senior Garden Grove City Councilman and candidate for the 68th Assembly District Mark Leyes has surpassed his opponent Van Tran in the race for real campaign dollars for the upcoming Primary election.
Van Tran yesterday sent out a press release alleging that his cash-on-hand figure placed him above well above Leyes. Tran reported having $242,337 in the bank. Closer examination of accrued expenses and money that is dedicated to the General Election left Tran with only $168,318.
Similarly, Leyes reported cash-on-hand of $181,799. Examination of accrued expenses and money dedicated to the General Election shows Leyes has available cash of $171,499.
Van Tran is playing a pretty good shell game. Hes spent nearly $250,000 and hasnt been talking with Republican Primary voters except for some minor flyers and voter registration that is costing him roughly $150 per voter. In the meantime, weve been collecting thousands of vote by mail applications. We are up and running an aggressive voter contact program, said Leyes spokeswoman Morrissa Sagal.
Leyes has raised over $212,000 in his campaign for State Assembly. With major fundraisers planned in February, the mail program has already begun. In campaigns, the key is not cash on hand, but rather it is about cash flow. Weve got nearly $200,000 available right now, and were well on our way to meeting our budget, concluded Sagal.
While true that Tran has raised more cumulative dollars than Leyes, many Orange County insiders are quietly questioning how someone can spend so much and have so little to show for it.
